My Briggs & Little order arrived this morning... hum... this should be enough to keep us in knitting for a while...
The handpainted Softspun yarns are back in stock along with a smattering of gorgeous colours in heritage, atlantic, regal and softspun... toss in a few patterns, cakes of roving and TADA... this is what it looks like :)
P.S. Mister postman also brought my Brown Sheep yarn binder... I feel a Lamb's Pride order in the wind... which by the way- winter's back on the bay...

Thrum hat develops

Well, my thrum hat pattern design is well under way. I'm ready for my thrums.. all 200 of them.. You can see that my yarn is Cabin Fever's Cottage Colours... I left the B&L red for the knitting group to knit...
Now, what colour of thrums shall I use? The off white would look great... and so my hat moves ahead... to be finished before our thrum class...

One hat finished... more to go

Well, in my early morning rising today I decided I stay up and keep knitting on Jim's hat. Maybe I could get it finished... and I did...
One ball of www.cabinfever.ca Cabin Fever Northern Lights- Molasses colour- a brown tweedie mix... it was a simple roll back, ribbed cuff stst top with 4 dble decreases... I like the pattern of a four decrease top better than an 8 decrease top... I find it sits nicely on the top of Jim's head.. I would have a picture except that it's now on his head... anyway, now onto to the Gap-tas-tic cowl... it takes so long to make any headway... 131 sts in seed stitch... boring!!.. at least the yarn is fun.. Cascade Nikki- multi chunky weight... coral, brown, purple, grey, mix... it really is nice...
Now to start a cowl for Jim... what pattern to choose.. I think a simple 2x2 rib would work.. When you live by the water the wind can be really bitter... along with the snow blowing...
We're on the downward slope of Christmas week... we dropped off gifts on the weekend- one more group to go... the wrapping is down, so on to turkey dinner tomorrow with our friends from www.loftgalleryart.com Phil and Debra... We get together often for dinner meetings, Sunday afternoon coffee and the gallery usually with a few goodies...

Lest we forget...

It's been nineteen years since my Mom passed away. I think of her often especially when I'm knitting with her knitting needles. The elastics still in place on the ends of the DPNs... making mittens I expect.
Remembrance day is the time to remember the brave young men & women who fought to keep the future generations free. Some made the ultimate sacrifice and others refrain from talking about their time in war torn areas of the world. In any case, I say Thank You from the bottom of my heart. My cousin Charlie Weir was part of the Canadian army who liberated Holland. He doesn't talk about it much but such a young man he was at the time. Here's a picture of him talking with school children at a service in London Ontario.

He's a real character, still very active in his late 80's...

Awhile ago I was asked if I would like to write a few articles for Curious the Tourist Guide..I said sure, that would be such fun... My first article appeared in the November issue...

Knit Fest 2011- was so much fun... Set up was early for a 9am start... Jim was in the kitchen preparing lunch for 22 crazy knitters... tough job.. he managed - nicely -the food was delish!!

Brenda made a tasty breakie- muffins, fruit and coffee.. The Ravenna hall had the perfect set up for the day... ring side kitchen counters, lots of table room and excited knitters...

We had girls from Barrie, Meaford, Collingwood and area... and Deb from Orillia... what a day... the top down baby cardie was well under way as Deb enlighted us to the differences between YO, M1left, M1right, M1 small (her choice).. your choice to make but now that you know how each one looks, you choose the outcome.. off they went again... they continued along with their workbooks... studying the next choices... it wasn't long before lunch was served... it was a good time for a seventh inning stretch... a few girls slipped over to the Ravenna General store for a pie or two.. and on our way again... this time we add patterns... wow!!... choice again... 4st, 6st, 7st patterns.. Deb full of ideas on placement, math hints and samples to drool over... again choices to make... since this class was releasing your inner designer- the choices were tough... but did they have fun!! not only with colour but pattern, cardie sizes- so much to learn... quick tips along the way and before we know it- the show was over... we were tired but revived up... the sun was bright all day blasting through the windows... and the view of Beaver Valley was stunning... a BIG thanks to Brenda for all her help- Jim for the marvelous chef duties- and to Deb for sharing her design talents with all of us.... we are better knitters today... now what about Knit Fest 2012??... in the making

What a week!!

Last week was filled with fun... On Wednesday morning Brenda, Deb Gemmell and myself were introducing the local Rogers morning show hosts to the world of knitting. The table was full of ideas that would fill the one hour show with chat.
From there, Deb came back to the shop to sit in with the afternoon class. We had our regular group of gals along with three new knitters. Deb was most kind to help Mary rekindle her knitting talents. Here's Carol with a little show and tell. She edged her shawl with a touch of ruffle... well done... Deb & Brenda deep in thought...

Knit Cafe success story

Thursday was our launch of the Thursday afternoon drop in Knit Cafe. Heather was winding yarn for her latest project - a grey felted bucket hat.
Ladies started arriving with bags in tow. We discovered three projects from years past that needed finishing. All sweaters in an almost finished state- but not quite... needed Eatons Lady Fair aran colour for two of the projects. The other sweater in need of a collar was rust in colour. It had very deep sleeve cuffs so with a little discussion Shirley decided cutting the ribbed cuff off and replacing it with a beautiful rust tweed was going to do it. So, the cuffs and collar will be a beautiful rust tweed. With Heather's guidance Shirley will get started at their next knitting group meeting in Markdale and by the time our next cafe happens they rust sweater will be one it's way to completion. whew!! oh and she will stop @ Hilda's for a custom cut zipper for the closure.
Now, Min's sweater needs some help but with luck Brenda who also joined us for the afternoon has an Eaton's stash at home- how handy was that!! and the chances of that- slim to nil... stroke of luck!! With the stars a lining Min may just get the chance to finish this beautiful fair isle sweater. Jan was working on a luscious alpaca ribbed scarf. I had a small show n tell- a wrap nearly done knit in Sirdar Indie- a chunky multi colour. The purple and green peek through the dark browns with delight. It will be nice and warm... oh and my Tilli silk twinkle scarf that my dogs decided to run around the house with the other day... I came home to find the ball of silk in one room and the scarf/needles etc in the other... They took one look at me and headed for the hills... their frolic was over and trouble was ahead... never mind- it's all good and the dogs are alive and well...

The 5th annual TASTE OF BLUE presented by Collingwood Whisky kicks off this Saturday at noon until 5pm.

Guests can sample food, beer, wine and liquor from over 13 Village Patios plus the Culinary Market featuring members of the Apple Pie Trail.

Live music starts at noon with Pop & Jazz Sensations Coco Love Alcorn and Brian Macmillan – back by popular demand after great success at the recent Peak to Shore Music Festival. Coco & Brian will play at noon and again at 4pm.

Tasting kits are $20 each and the first 600 include a signature bag with a sampling glass from Collingwood Whisky. Also included in the bag will be a map and itemized list of food and drink samples that will take you from Sunset Grill, along Water Street, up to the Village Plaza and over to the Oliver & Bonacini patio. In total guests can visit over 16 food and drink locations including local wines from Coffin Ridge and Georgian Hills Vineyard along with Creemore Beer and Thornbury Cider.

Three local chefs will showcase the tricks of their trade including the Collingwood Cooking Academy at 1pm, Rocky Raccoon cafe from Owen Sound at 2pm and Rusty’s at Blue at 3:15pm.

Free children’s activities will run from 1-4pm including free cookie decorating and face painting on Water Street.

Can you believe it... we're approaching the end of August... and so the schedule for fall knitting classes emerges...

This year we offer morning, afternoon and evening classes each Wednesday.

Our refresher knitting classes will commence on Wed October 5th @ 10:30am to 12:00pm and again @ 7:00pm to 8:30pm.
This will be a 2 week class followed by 2 weeks each of learning to knit with circular needles and double point needles.

Our afternoon classes will continue for the intermediate knitters @ 1:00pm to 3:30pm.
We will offer a mixture of technical skill enhancements and fabulous project designs.

The special interest classes such as learning to knit socks, make infinity scarves, felted hats/mittens/slippers, cables, lacework, fair isle work, thrumming and more will be scheduled for each time segment.

The full schedule of classes will be finalized by early Sept.

Customer loyalty.. do you practice??

This is an often heard lament these days from retailers in our area. The question stems from the rural retail experience for the past 150 years or so and the significant change in customer behavior over the last five years. One of the foundations of the rural community was loyalty—loyalty to your family, your neighbor, your community—including loyalty to local retailers and service businesses. When you looked for a product or service, you looked to your local businesses. Your loyalty was rewarded by a high level of service including an inventory based on your past needs, a willingness to order in special products, fair pricing and extended credit terms if necessary. It worked well for 150 years, but things have changed.

There are many pressures that have changed purchasing patterns, and to name just a few: 1. The focus on price rather than on value 2. The pressure to provide immediate gratification (ie. Customer wants it now—unwilling to wait) 3. Willingness of the customer to accept substitutes (ie. Buy what is offered—not necessarily what you really wanted) 4. Ability of the customer to search further afield (including on the web) 5. Economic uncertainty limiting many customers to purchase only essential items

Does this mean the ultimate demise of the rural retail business? Some undoubtedly have failed or will fail, others have closed because the owners don’t want to carry on under the ‘new’ rules. However, we need not go ‘belly up’ to use a Georgian Bay fishing term. Loyalty in the past was based on physical proximity (your local town) and personal relationships . Today you can get to Toronto, Toledo or even Tokyo to purchase products, and few of us know the owner of Wal-Mart or even Canadian Tire and none of us have been personally served by him or her.

Today, you can build loyalty, but in a different way. Your shoppers are looking world-wide for products, so why don’t you look world-wide for customers? Build loyalty by building a customer base which has an interest (and preferably a passionate interest) in what you offer, what you do, or what you are interested in.

Collect e-mails from customers that show interest in your business, and treat those people as your primary customer base by interacting with them on a regular (but not spam level) basis. Build a following on Facebook or set up a blog attached to your business Web-site. Give your ‘fans’ good solid information, interesting ideas or facts, personal comments and discussion.

Build your customer loyalty around their interest in what you are doing. With luck and some good management, you will find customers corresponding with you, tracking you down from some surprising and very far-away places. Lots of folks come to the southern Georgian Bay region, and from the studies done most of them return more than once. You can build a loyal customer base out of all those folks from around the world who find our region worth visiting. Whenever they return, they will come to visit (and shop) with you in person because you have a common bond with them, and you have been loyally including them in your business life. If you don’t know how to start, please look at the Chamber website for companies and people that can get you going!

It's that time of year again when our streets are closed and the sounds of "Blue Suede Shoes" is rockin the speakers...
Yesterday at knit class we celebrated with the famous "Elvis King cookies" made by our local Tim Horton's. Jan Trude and group have been making these cookies for years now. ALL proceeds are donated to the Collingwood General and Marine http://www.cgmh.on.ca/ for their education programs.
It was our summer movie afternoon knit class. The temperatures were soaring outside while we were coolin off with Lucy Neatby DVD viewing. Once again the class discovered new techniques and fun ways to add changes to their projects.
Diane is working away on here EZ denim blue cable sweater. Ruth is working on a secret project for a fall gift. Dallas was knitting on sock #2 using the famous nicknamed "Parrot" Zauberball sock yarn. Heather was just getting started on her Man socks for the fall fair judging contest. Arlene was showing off her beautifully finished Baby Bunting bag for her fall grandchild arrival. I'm designing the last of my retreat weekend kits. Before we know it- our weekend will be here...
So, it's HOT downtown but soon the street will be full of Elvi in glitter suits... join in the fun.

I love southern Ontario. It's a wonderful place to live and explore. Our Monday drive took us to our favourite cheese n turkey shop in Listowel. A little turkey and a lot of cheese- Danish cheese at its best!! some blue, havarti, esrom, gouda... all great choices...
Then a little yarn purchase here and there... lunch out in Mount Forest... then a quick drop by the Mount Forest Chamber office...

The pattern will only be available in our hat kit with instructions to make up in sport, DK & worsted weight yarn. The rolled edge followed by ribbing sets off a nice edge.
The sample is made up in Mission Falls yarn.

Wednesday afternoons with Lucy

I love Lucy... not Ricardo but Neatby!!.. We had such fun yesterday. I planned to host a Lemonade & Popcorn party every Wednesday afternoon with the knit group so we could watch Lucy Neatby DVDs. Yesterday was our first show. How much fun did we have?? TONS!!... so much so they want to watch the same DVD again. The cast ons, & offs followed by the Inc & Dec was so interesting- they want to view it again... The helpful tips and how to/why info combos was such a good fit.
Sometimes one has to get into knitting for a while so when a DVD of info come along it opens the mind to new concepts instead of confusing one.
They are keeners now to try a few of their new techniques. Next week pictures... We were pleased to have join our group Marsha from PA USA. Her husband was on the golf course and she had dropped into the shop the day before, we chatted about the movie afternoon and she joined right in.
If you might think Lucy's DVDs would be interesting- try it you'll like it!!

Simple Ripple

As time draws near to the last minute gift giving, I thought I'd work on a few "One ball projects" I sure had fun with the Vienna yarn from Naturally.
Have a look at this hat and scarf combo. Both the hat and scarf took one ball each with a couple of yards to spare. The scarf is 5" x 30" so with one more ball you could have a good size length. It will look fab with a gorgeous wooden shawl pin tucked thru it...

Well it's Jim's annual meeting in Germany.. this year Air Canada has the direct flight to Copenhagen back on again- yeah!! Jim is spending a couple of days there with my shopping list after the convention.. my list has wine gums, Jule trimmings, and Stenia undies--- that's right from Fotex... it's a shop like our Loblaw food, household and clothing... I can't wait... He will visit with our friends and have a wonderful time... while I'm at home holding down the fort... oh well I say... the undies are on the way.. crazy I know.... but when you find a good fit why mess with a good thing...

Elvis is heading to Collingwood

I'm knitting like crazy to finish a few baby gifts for a shower this weekend. My new-born booties are now my oversized footwear about to become my new- newborn felted booties:)
The real new born booties are almost finished. The baby hat looks a tad large so it will be gently felted to reduce the size.It would really be nice if I started these projects before the week I need them... oh well, such is life. Take it as it comes and don't fuss too much....

So, like I was saying- Elvis is coming to Collingwood this weekend- so dust off the ol-blue suede shoes and head on over the town will be hopping!!

I am so excited. Gifted- by Mags Kandis has just arrived. I see so many lovely things to make.

Min danske venner vil elsker de " fulled jule bling" - translation-

We have been very busy around here. We celebrated Canada Day in Collingwood by participating in the downtown fashion show.
My daughter modeled a fun summer tank and short. My son wore the Tilley hat & vest with hemp pants, a bamboo polo and a side pouch... they both looked fab.. my grandson stole the show... he was a little shy but came around when asked a few questions...
The main street is now open right down to the waterfront. What a lovely stroll along the water area.

It's been a very busy week here in the wool shop. New yarns are arriving- new classes are in the works for Fall- A few KALs (knit a long) have been organized- like the February Lady Sweater & the FibreTrends Clog...
We are even planning for a Super Seven Scarf class - every Wednesday- each month two or more FREE patterns with kits will be offered up. ie: October- Breast Cancer Scarf in pink of course...

Yesterday Brenda and I headed out on a road trip to... Old Mill Knitting... to view new yarns for fall from Naturally... We had a fantastic lunch at http://www.rousseauhouse.ca/.. the food was yummy and the desserts.. well, now I know why dessert has 2 ss's... that's because you want more than just one- lemon or pecan who can make a choice between that....

We met this group for the first time- Beth from OMK, Oliver from Naturally NZ, Bev from Filitura de Crossa and Julie from Needle Emporium (Beth's Sis).. and of course our fabulous sales rep Cathy...

We saw new yarns, colours, samples- and other LYS owners- so nice to put a face to the name!!
Then off to the warehouse for a girl's all time favorite sport??- you guessed it- SHOPPING...

I'll give you a sneak peek- here's what on the way....

Our Shelridge - Cabin Fever "Ridges" Sock that rocks!!!

I had so much fun choosing from my Shelridge sock yarn bin.
What about the black/grey variegated with the hot pink- my version of Licorice Allsorts :) That would be cute... what about the Scottish Highlands- shades of purples, lichen, greens with the lichen or green contrast... that would work too.... I settled on Deserts of Tucson... turqs, rust browns with touches of blues :) that's it!!!
And here it is.... Heather Hufton has created this beauty exactly to pattern.
Brenda and I were teasing her about switching up the contrast colours- but as you can see by the finished socks- we have two opposite colourways- and I love it!!
Who needs totally matching socks? It is more fun to let your creative slip hang down or in this case your socks....
Kudos to Heather for a beautiful creation- Thanks to Shelridge for such fab yarn to work with and of course thanks to Cabin Fever Ridges socks pattern...

Some people are just not animal lovers.. I can understand that.. sort of... in any case- our fair weather neighbour has returned to her "summer house" for the next few months. She believes that in order to stop Morley from barking at her - she must spray him with the hose... You can imagine my face when I watched her do just that this morning- standing in her housecoat- watering her flowers- turns and sprays Morley who is now barking at her posturing with the hose!!
Morley responds to her intimidating style with a bark- "I don't like you" and she keeps on watering him!!... I asked her to stop and her reply " Oh, you don't want me doing that?" I informed her that if she keeps spraying him in her threatening way, he will keep barking at her- I asked her to ignore him and he will go about his way- I have heard her on many occasion indicate that she'll get the hose and fix him!!...
I thought teasing dogs was just something children did- not 80 year olds!!!
Morley went about his way- I sat and watched the Orioles, Gold Finches, Hummingbirds, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Robins, Nuthatches, Chicadees and of course Grackles enjoy a little breakfast at our feeders- while I enjoyed my morning coffee....

Georgian Bay cabin For Sale

We are all set for our first Felting clog class tonight. Donna has been busy getting the clogs started and left in various stages for the class to see them transform into felted wonders.
We were fortunate today that Julie from
www.mycollingwood.ca stopped by for a photo shoot for our felted examples. now even Julie wants to take the class. Look at all the really fun pieces we've made.

From the felted hat to the needle felted Nisse... ipod case, eyeglass case, the Clog before & after shots, felted polar bear- we surely had a fab selection of items....

Felting can be so much fun. Who really knows how much your project will felt as from time to time your yarn while you might be using the same yarn, the project and knitting stitches will dictate the final outcome.

Our Butternut tree is GPS'd...

A couple of years ago I contacted the ministry to ask about the Butternut tree endangered program. Madelaine D showed up to check out out 80+year old shade tree. She was amazed at how healthy the tree was and GPS'd it right away. We have been saving tree fruit every year for the MNR to pick up.
We had great news that our Butternut babies were identified and 100% pure DNA tested Butternut!!... yahoo... Several of our fruit seeds have grown and been replanted @ the Angus tree farm. :), the Sommerville Tree farm in Alliston and a few other tree farms.
It is pleasing to know that we are helping an endangered tree species...

Criticism... misplaced

Criticism can be constructive or down right uncalled for. Today was an overload of misplaced critiques.
It's the old "damned if you do... and dammed if you don't... I will always try to be objective and look at both sides of the comments and situations.
Today was interesting to say the least... it was full of "I think you should do this" I think you should do that" and why don't you do??.....
The one time I forget something- wow someone's right there to remind me...
Walking in my shoes for one week would explain to you first hand what it's like to be in my business.
I'll leave my comments at that because I read the Mags Kandis blog today and a smile hit my face... On such a weird day how could the name Selvedge a British magazine come up twice... That must be a sign for me to take notice of...

It's Felted Clog time....

It's time for a fun class in felting- Fiber Trends Felted Clogs were our choice....
I hear these are addictive!! you simply can't make just one pair....

It is always fun to see a before and after felting project. We will take a few pictures along the way.

Clog Class fee $30.00 for Part 1 & 2. Learn the pattern idiosyncrasies, technics and general terms during part 1. Part 2 focusing on the sole attachment and felting how-tos...
Part 3 class is optional but extremely fun. Embellishments for your clogs- beads- needle felting- embroidery fee: $20.00

Both classes require preregistration- There will be a Wednesday night Part 1 class starting Wednesday April 28th from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. The part 2 class is the following Wednesday night May 5th.

My friend Debra invited myself and Joanne over to her place last night for a girlie night... good wine, great food- superb company...
We shared my kinda dinner- a little hummus- olives, cheese, salami, snack breads, crackers, oh and fruit- it was wonderful...
We chatted about Joanne's time in Florida- her Monday knit group @ Starbucks- sign me up!!!
She golfed, shopped, visited wool shops, visited with family- a general fab time!!
Debra chatted about the latest gallery Square Foot Art show @ her gallery- www.loftgallery.ca
It was a successful show for sure- I helped out @ the "check out" desk... It's really wonderful to see so many "art lovers"...
We then compared our latest & greatest knitting projects- Joanne with the gorgeous little silk lacy scarf, her beautiful multi textured shawl and some lovely new mohair for her sweater.
Debra modeled her purple & green triangle shawl- what a beauty!!... and an experimental poncho in royal blue- nice cover up for cool weather...
I took my Silk ruffle scarves to show them- and showcased my baby blanket for Leigh- I'd better get this finished her baby arrives tomorrow- eeks!!!
So, all n all it was a wonderful evening- Thanks Debra- we'll have to do that again!!

True friends are hard to find- so when you find a Debra & Joanne you consider yourself lucky!!

PF Flyers: Radio Flyer: Clam Diggers...??

Well, it was sure funny this morning on Canada AM. Jeff seemed to be the only one who knew what PF Flyers, Radio Flyer and Clam diggers were.
Of course PF flyers were canvas runners, white laces and high tops. I had a pair that I just loved... being a baseball player I can still remember my red Bramalea Girls Softball team suits and my PFFs. I was the only one who could turn a home run into a 3 bagger- so my coach said... again with the short jokes...

Now, as for the clam diggers/pedal pushers, as a girl from the 50's they were the summer pants.- just below the knee, or on me about mid calf.. height challenged... they didn't get caught in my bicycle chain and kept my legs cool... The boys wore the clam diggers but I'm not so sure they were that popular. It was a "girlie thing" not very boyish.... I think clam diggers came about because when you were digging for clams one would roll up their pant legs, wade into the water and dig for clams... hence clam diggers were born...
I think the more modern version of baggie longish shorts for guys have become more popular.
As any clothing fad it recycles every 10 years or so... I'm sure clam diggers will be back...

Now, the Radio flyer... I was never lucky enough to own one.. I had the imitation...

This is the Cadillac of wagons.
Kneeling one leg in the wagon, pushing off with the other leg- you could fly down the streets- of course with your PFFs and pedal pushers on too...

It's been a fun morning reminiscing about my childhood. So, Jeff you are not the only one who knows about these great items... Sadly the age factor is at play...

Every Easter since moving home from Denmark I lament about the fact that I won't make my annual trip to Illum's candy department for my Faberge Easter eggs. As you read in an earlier post, my wish came true!!

I have made this lovely little Silk ruffle scarf in Noro for Akiko as a thank you for sending me my Easter treats!!

Notice the green glass display head- My friend Janet gave me four glass "hat heads" as I call them. They were Jan's Mother-in-law, Vi's. Vi passed away this week at 94. She had a marvelous collection of hats. She was a hat girl!!... Her front closet had a top shelf of hat heads dressed with HATS!!
I will treasure these glass hat heads. Thanks Jan, for such a lovely thoughtful gift.

It's turkey season in Georgian Bay

Driving to work in the Georgian Bay area can be a real adventure. This morning was no exception. An anxious group of wild turkeys were venturing out to cross highway 26 in rush hour. foolish girls!!

Pretty soon the local apple blossoms will be popping open. Our valley orchards will be full of bees excited to get the first taste of blossom juice.

I'm glad the sun is shining today. It's a tad cool but soon the warmer temps will be back.
When the snow leaves the anxious gardener in me emerges. A small selection of daffs & tulips are peeking out in the front garden. Our little blue bells and snow drops still cover our front grass. I hope they stay around a little longer. The trees are budding, the robins are nest building and Morley is back to chasing the squirrels.

Here's Morley: Morley's heading to the cottage this weekend. I'm sure there will be more adventures of Morley, so stay tuned....

Min chokolade aeg fra Michelsen...

I was so excited today when my husband showed up at my shop with a small package under his arm. I could see that it came from Denmark and that had me puzzled.... what could this be??
It was my favorite chocolates Michelsen in the Faberge egg. oh ya!!
Our friend Akiko lives in Sweden.
She remembered how much I loved these eggs every Easter so she sent me 3.... These metal eggs take on a historical Faberge pattern- on the inside is 3 chokolade goodies.... I will savour each yummy flavour.. of course I will share...
In return for making my day, I have a beautiful camel hair scarf and fingerless mitts to send back to her. Denmark will be warm now but she will remember me on a chilly fall day with her new knitwear ...

It's well worth knitting this fun scarf... I used up a little stash silk yarn in denim and natural shades... By the time I hit 1200 stitches I was using two circs- one for knitting and one as a holder... sounds a bit wild and crazy... it was.. but oh so gorgeous when finished
With my "natural" hair colours the nubby silk tones on my denim jacket look fab...

Sunday was my day off and our day to drive out & about. We headed over towards Elmira- we like the farm land countryside drives... As we drove along we bumped into Wellington Fibers.

It’s class time again… Here’s a few “I need help” requests we’ve had come in from our knitters so we created a class just for you.

If you haven’t attended one of our classes with Brenda Harris as the instructor well you are in for a treat!! Brenda is a very accomplished passionate knitter. She is a wealth of knowledge and her classes offer numerous helpful hints far beyond the lesson techniques offered.

Finishing Techniques

v Learn to sew seams

v Mattress Stitch

v 3-needle Bind off

v Kitchener Stitch

Finishing a garment can make or break the overall look for your newest labour of love. This class is designed to help you fine tune your skills and create a level of confidence that when you read a pattern and see the term “use 3-needle bind off” you are so confident that you can do just that- your class skills kick into high gear and your project is finished with ease….

If the thought of finishing your sock toes with the famous “Kitchener stitch” has you running in the other direction barefoot- take this class and

de-mystify that technique….

This is a “hands on” class so you must have your “homework” finished to bring to the class. This will enable you to practise the techniques over and over again…

Homework: 2 squares of knitting as follows:

Cast on 40 stitches- worsted weight yarn, (17 sts – 22sts) using 4.5mm-5.5mm - straights or circs. which ever you like

(fine or chunky yarn too difficult to work with)

Work 5 rows of ribbing k1,p1 and then

Work stockinet stitch (knit RS, purl WS) until piece measures 4”, Do not cast off

Make two squares leaving both “on the needles” Do not cast off so you have “live” stitches to work with.

Part 2= Wednesday April 21st 10:30am to 12:00pm $25.00 1 ½ hours

Finishing Techniques

v Learn to pick up stitches in the correct ratio for ribbing buttonhole bands

v Learn to pick up stitches on a curve as in a neckline

v Learn to make a perfect one-row buttonhole

Have you shyed away from making a sweater pattern that asks you to “pick up stitches around the neckline and work ribbing”? Or perhaps a pattern that calls for “buttonholes spaced correctly on the ribbed band”. If these terms are confusing and keep you away from knitting a fabulous sweater pattern, then this is the class for you.

This a “hands on” class so you must prepare homework ready to work on for the class.

Homework: make two squares as follows:

Cast on 40 stitches – worsted weight yarn, (17sts – 22sts) using 4.5mm to 5.5mm straights or circs. which ever you like

Work 5 rows of ribbing k1, p1 and then

Work stockinet stitch (knit RS, purl WS) until piece measures 4”

On RS (right side) cast off 5 sts and work across row in st st.

On next and every other RS row cast off 1st @ the “neck edge” until 30sts remain

Work stockinet stitch for 1” more –leave work on needles- do not cast off

Part 3= Wednesday April 28^th 10:30am to 12:00pm $25.00 1 ½ hours

The pre-requisite for this class is participating in our Part 2 Finishing Techniques.

We have designed this class to accommodate the knitter who has a semi-finished project that needs “fine tuning”. After completing the Part 2 class you should be able to try your hand at picking up stitches for the ribbed band and creating perfectly spaced buttonholes.

You want to dive right in and getting going, BUT are still a little hesitant.

Bring your project to class and let Brenda guide you to the finish line!!

This class has a limit of 4 participants.

It's my day off and I've planned to meet Buffy Taylor @her farm, Shelridge Farms. I'm so excited!! The Taylors have a wonderful selection of yarns - perfect addition to my wool shop. I haven't received my Classic Elite Alpaca sox yarn and I can't wait. I've already labelled one colourways Blue Mountain- blues n greens.. just like the bay... and of course not to be out done by Bruce Trail - mixture of greens n browns- just like the trails... so my search for the perfect Apple Blossom colourways just might be over... yesterday I discovered that Shelridge had the perfect colourways, already labelled Apple Blossom- :))
The area I live in is a blend between water, nature and orchards... now you see the bay, the trails and the apples..

Well, it's the afternoon already but I've had a fun morning. The knitters are racing into the shop, picking up project yarn for their March break holidays and off they go... Wish I was going on a March break!!! someday!!
So, I'm busy working on the Block squares for our afghan class.... taking care of a few housingkeeping details around the shop, back to my knitting... and now it's raining... sure hope the snow stays on the hills or the March break skiers will be board!!... maybe they'll revert to knitting... ah, one can always hope... Hope springs eternal I hear....
I finished a little baby shrug- so cute- Sirdar Bamboo and PomPom in baby pink... My 50's babydoll never looked so good!!
And back to my baby blanket.. I'm working with Flusi Regia sock yarn- dble strand- giant dishcloth really--- gorgeous colours--- for my BF's daughter's 1st baby...
Classic Elite and Naturally arrived at the shop this week... with more to follow... I can't wait for the Alpaca Sox, hand dyed variegated- my feet need something soft and comfee...

Well, I viewed one of the Fall 2010 GELCO lines for the coming fall season. It's pretty fab!!... nice colours- purple, red, taupes, touch of animal, kiwi, turq, black-ye-old stand by... Nice denims black, dark blue, taupe... and of course the basic pant every wardrobe should have...
I was spoiled for choice!!!

We're off to the races... how many can we get done before Christmas?

What a fun class we had. Neckers, cowls and gaiters dressing the wooden heads stands. Brenda had been hard at work getting our patterns and designs created, knitted and ready to go. Even at the last minute the Green button neckwarmer emerged - a touch of wool and ribbons to create a wonderful piece to keep the chill out.

Everyone was hard at work... Debra was taking a moment to reflect on the class!!

Their patterns were chosen with such great care, the creations were started, up with a flair, Smiles and laughter filled the air!!!

Battle of the Blades wrapped up tonight... my vote was right on.. Craig and Jamie WON!!
The music... clapping, whistles!!... how exciting- thrilling actually...
Kurt Browning skated a fabulous routine... unbelievable... All the pairs were just wonderful... I chose Craig and Jamie because Craig took the risks - jumps, new moves- each week his figure skating skills increased... just my opinion...What to watch on tv now?
Doesn't matter- knitting takes over... oh ya... what will I make?

Well, well... the shelves are filling up.. Noro arrived along with, Berroco Sox, Mirasol, Aslan Trends, Louisa Harding, Berroco Peruvia... and Viking Garn- wonderful pattern support...

Kits anyone? Mohair Socks, Shawls, Christmas Stocking, Baby hat & bootie kit, Hemwol sock kits, Lace fingerless gloves, Afghans- fab selection of textures and colours... nice gifts!!

On the clothing side of things- the Irish wool cashmere blend jackets, ruanas and hats will be in this week... oh what beauties!!! and coming from my favourite land of Guinness...

Watch for our late night shopping hours... we are open everyday until Christmas eve...

Deb Gemmell was delightful!!

Saturday arrived like all the others... this day Deb Gemmell was coming to my shop... yup... my shop...
She came in sat down at my kitchen table and shared a coffee with Sharon, Karen, Gerri, Brenda and myself... All her expertise poured out... let's make a Teddy bear sweater... I was watching as I had to tend to my morning clients... Each gal started and listened, knit and listened more... Their eyes and ears peeled on Deb... try this.. try this increase, add stitches here.. and so on..
These gals are experienced knitters.. even they were finding this workshop informative.. I'm so glad this workshop was a success!!
Deb is such a talented designer... I have sold all my Need a Hat books and have to order more...
I look forward to planning for another Deb Gemmell workshop.. in the Spring.. so for all you gals who missed this chance... opportunity will knock again...

Battle of the Blades.. oh ya!!!

For years I watched figure skating.. wanting to be a good as any of the ice skaters... saturday morning skate class was fun and gave me a little insight to the skating world...
Tonight we watched the Battle of the Blades... what a show.. strong men, soft and gentle giants flipping over their partner with such grace... the women are beautiful power houses... graceful and talented... together the partner ships have blossomed more each week until the final show tonight...
I'm not a big fan of reality shows but this one caught my eye... it's been such fun...
I look forward to finding out who wins the voting... I voted but I can't tell you... until tomorrow...

Goin on a road trip...

We off to Toronto for the Diamond Yarn open house... Brenda's coming along and we're going to have some fun, no doubt...
The two of us loose in the wool department... we could cause some serious damage...

I have my shop list of things to look for... I will have a tough time separating my wants from my needs... you know how it is.. I don't need anything... me stash overfloweth--- oh, one more ball or two won't make a difference...
We'll do the meet and greet and head to the preview of Spring/Summer 2010 new yarns...

The Sirdar eco wool arrives this week for our group to get started on the giant cowl... should be fun...

Our Craigleith shawl kits are ready to go... well almost... what beautys!!!!
A fine collection of textures and colours hand picked to create a wonderful shawl... stay tuned for pictures on that one...
